In 2021, 97% of the surveyed Italian solar installers are expected to offer battery storage solutions. EUPD Research will publish the results of the 13th edition of the Global PV Installer Monitor 2020/2021© for the Italian market in January. The survey sheds light on the rooftop photovoltaic (PV) segment in Italy and provides exclusive insights from the perspective of the PV installers.

Bonn/Germany. According to the latest data published by ANIE Rinnovabili, Italy’s distributed storage capacity linked to renewables (170 MW/267 MWh) has surged compared to March 2019 (80 MW/168 MWh). Overall, 90 MW/100 MWh of new small-sized storage capacity was added between 2019 Q1 and 2020 Q3.
Almost all installed storage systems have a capacity below 20 kWh. More specifically, 44% of the installed storage systems have a capacity up to 5 kWh and 40% have a capacity between 5 and 10 kWh, thus indicating a prevalence of residential installations.
The results of the 13th edition of the Global PV Installer Monitor 2020/2021© will be published by EUPD Research this month. The survey targets PV installers in the main European PV markets plus Australia. This year, 100 Italian installation companies participated in the survey. The report provides exclusive insights on the latest developments in the rooftop PV segment in Italy.
One full section of the report is dedicated to battery storage solutions. The data from the survey aligns with the strong storage market development. In fact, 64% of the surveyed installers were already offering battery storage solutions in 2020 and one-third of the installers are planning to do so in 2021. As a result, only three percent of the surveyed installers will not offer storage solutions in 2021. This is an extremely positive development compared to 2019, when half of the surveyed installers were not planning to offer battery storage solutions.
Multiple business cases are fostering the rampant growth of the Italian storage market. Next to tax credits made available by the central government, local governments are also offering some funding schemes. Furthermore, future penetration of electric vehicles will require additional storage capacity in order to support the grid managing the increase in electricity demand.
