2019 was again another record year for the German residential battery storage market with around 65,000 new installations, according to a study by Bonn-based market researcher EUPD Research. The Bavarian manufacturer sonnen leads the supply side, followed by BYD, E3/DC, SENEC and LG Chem.
Bonn. In 2019 the positive trend of recent years regarding photovoltaic (PV) installations continued. Within a year more than 78,500 new PV systems were registered in the residential segment between three and ten kilowatts – a decisive segment for battery storage systems. In comparison to the previous year, it translates to a 41% increase of PV systems in this category. The significant increase of electricity prices and a decrease of installation costs in 2019, continues to make one’s own electricity production more attractive. Also, the rising number of electric vehicles can already be seen as a driver for the installation of solar PV systems.
Based on the fact that a joint installation of solar PV systems with battery storage in Germany currently makes up almost 90% of all installations, the PV market development is especially important for residential battery storage sales. The ongoing positive development for solar systems on single- and two-family houses additionally spurs installation records for battery storage solutions. According to calculations of Bonn-based market and economic research firm EUPD Research, the number of residential energy storage systems amounted to 65,000 in 2019. It includes new installations as well as retrofitting solar PV systems with energy storage. In comparison to 2018, the German residential battery storage grew by 44%. The study at hand moreover shows that the cumulated market volume doubled within the last two years with currently about 206,000 residential storage systems installed in Germany.
