The health sector is one of the biggest German industries.
Due to the medical progress and the aging population, it is growing at a constant rate, while the requirements for supply and cost efficiency rise accordingly.
As a result, the structures are continuously developing – particularly because the
German health system must be kept competitive and sustainable.
Patients and service providers will increasingly be confronted with these
changes in the upcoming years. Thus, they will have to adapt to the new
conditions. In this context, EuPD Research has taken interest in the sector for years, with completed surveys
displaying important changes and critical factors along the whole supply chain; from the manufacturer via wholesale to
the patients. Special attention is given to the requirements of operational
health policy since healthy and productive employees are an essential factor
for international competition.

Occupational Health Management 2007/2008 – the Structures, Strategies and Potential of Large German Corporations |

Companies interviewed/method:
The "Occupational Health Management 2007/08" study, produced in cooperation with the University of Bielefeld, the European Business School, the BKK Association, the Bertelsmann Foundation and the Hans-Böckler Foundation, adds another volume to the series of studies on occupational health management. Firstly, the entire survey population consisting of 500 of the biggest German companies was increased by 300 businesses. In-depth interviews were then carried out with more than 120 companies, to discover facts about their structure, location, strategy, control mechanisms, performance and actions. Using selected evaluation criteria, an index of 20 companies with particularly good occupational health management was created. The media partner for the study is the Handelsblatt, as it has been since 2005.
The result:
There are still very different levels of development and types of approach between different companies. Economic reasons are normally behind the establishment of a system of health management within a company. In the light of this, the past few years have seen the discussion on social capital pushed more into the spotlight. The question behind this is how companies can maintain or increase their competitiveness by investing in the health of the employees.

Added value of the study:
The strategic and structural elements of occupational health management are highlighted in-depth. In addition, the value of control mechanisms in practice is evaluated and their successfulness studied. During the last few years, it has become clear that occupational health management is particularly efficient when it meets the needs of the employees exactly. For this reason a study into the uptake of employer schemes from the point of view of the employees was undertaken in 2007. This study also answers questions about what services are offered and what is wanted and needed. |
